Stowe Residence

Merging modern architecture with regional materials and forms, this ski house in Stowe, Vermont is sited to maximize views of the nearby Green Mountains from its perch above a pond.

Stowe, Vermont

This 5400 SF residence is located on 10 acres in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The site slopes to the west, affording spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The design merges modernism with regional materials to create a sympathetic yet dynamic environment. A mortar-washed-brick plinth supports two, wood-framed pavilions, one containing the great room, the other a master suite. A cedar greenhouse links the pavilions and provides access to the lower level, which contains guest rooms, an exercise room, potting shed and garage. All rooms open onto outdoor terraces and have extensive glazing on all sides. Loose laid stone walls are used extensively in the landscape to define outdoor rooms, paths and planting beds.
